How do I take care of my pearls?
Pearls are natural, organic and a lot softer and more delicate than gemstones and other jewelry. Therefore they require special care.
1. Store the pearls separately so that the surface is not damaged by sharp objects or other jewelry. A silk bag or a separate box is ideal.
2. Strong chemicals can damage the surface, as can hair spray and perfume. Put your pearls on after you have applied perfume and make up. Strong perspiration can also harm the pearls, do not wear them to the gym.
3. When you clean your pearls, use lukewarm water and a cotton cloth to carefully wipe them.
4. To help the pearls keep their beautiful luster, avoid storing them in extreme hot and dry environments. The pearl stores always keep a glass of water next to the valuable pearls, this keeps the air humid around the pearls.
5. Pearls will last a long time if you take care of them wisely. We advise you to have them restrung every couple of years to prevent the string from breaking.
6. The best way of keeping the luster of your pearls is to wear them! With regular cleaning after wearing them the natural body oils help the pearls to stay lustrous for many years.

How is a pearls quality determined?
There are many things affecting a pearl's quality. Usually seven categories are used.
Size: Usually the bigger the better but this also depends on the type of pearls.
Fresh water pearls and sea water pearls are smaller than South Sea and Tahitian pearls. A fresh water pearl's normal size is up to 7.5mm, a 10mm fresh water pearl is extremely large and valuable while a South Sea pearl at 10mm is considered small. South Sea pearls and Tahitian pearls are the biggest ones and are quite common in sizes up to 15mm, however, the larger pearls can get very expensive.
Shape: Shape matters - the rounder the pearl, the more valuable but this is really up to personal taste. Tear drop shaped pearls are less valuable but very popular for pendants as the shape looks very beautiful. South Sea and Tahitian pearls are rounder than fresh water pearls thus making a strand of perfectly round fresh water pearls very valuable. Many women love the semi-round fresh water button pearls and a strand of these is a lot more affordable than perfectly round pearls of the same origin and the same size. Fresh water pearls come in exciting baroque shapes and even in the shapes of hearts and coins. Baroque pearls are the least expensive since they are very irregularly shaped but can look equally nice depending on the style and design.
Surface: A pearl that is entirely free from blemishes and irregularities is extremely rare and valuable. The small spots can be considered as the pearls finger prints they are always unique. If you see a strand of pearls with no flaws, blemishes or irregularities whatsoever it should be extremely pricey. The higher the luster is of the pearl, the less noticable the flaws are.
Nacre: Is the material lining the oyster from which the pearl is created. Once a grain or bead is disturbing the oysters natural life, it starts to give out nacre, or mother-of-pearl, to protect itself from it. This is what builds the pearl from within.
Luster: The intense brightness from a real pearl seems to come from within. A fake pearl can be shiny but only on the surface. The real pearl has a radiance that illuminates from within the pearl because of light reflected in the many layers of nacre that the pearl is formed from.
Color: The color of a pearl is determined by the "mother-of-pearl" inside the shell. Pearls are seen in all possible colors since many of them have been dyed. Dyed pearls are easy to match and you can find the exact right color for you. If you want the color to be natural, remember that freshwater pearls only appear in white, peach, pink and lavender naturally. South Sea pearls are usually White or Golden and Tahitian pearls can range from very light gray and pink to dark and close to black. Dark Tahitian pearls are usually called black but the impression can range from green to gray, peacock to dark blue because of the overturn. For Tahitian pearls the darker ones with green overtones are considered more valuable. White pearls with a rose overturn is more valuable then those with a creamy tone. Judging a pearl on the color is affected by how common they are in a certain color. To make sure you get the most out of your pearls, the most important is to choose a color that matches your own skin tone.
Matching: Matching qualities are also considered for pearl strands. A nice strand of pearls in rare colors and sizes can require a long search to make sure that the pearls match each other well. If a piece is not correctly matched this will lower the price on the entire strand even if the pearls themselves are perfect and beautiful.

What do pearl quality ratings of A, AA, and AAA mean?
Grading pearls is not easy considering how many different aspect there are to compare. The seven criteria above are all taken into consideration. For example, a large size, beautiful luster and a perfect symmetrical shape can make up for small flaws and blemishes. For South Sea pearls and Tahitian pearls the A-AA-AAA system is widely accepted.
AAA: The top-quality pearl. The surface will have a very high luster and be virtually flawless.
AA: The surface will have a high luster, the surface can have small blemishes and the pearl might not be perfectly symmetric.
A: This is the lowest jewelry-grade pearl, with a lower luster and/or more than 25% of the surface showing defects. When a pearl of "A" quality is affixed to a piece of jewelry, for example an earring or a pendant, it can be mounted so that the flaws are hidden thus providing a great looking piece of jewelry at a lower price.
These three grading categories are obviously broad and allows for individual judgment but they are widely accepted. In pieces of jewelry with many pearls, such as strands and bracelets, every single pearl may not meet the indicated grade level. For example, most of the pearls in a strand graded "AAA" must meet "AAA" standard while a few pearls could have a few blemishes or a slightly lower luster.
Fresh water pearls are different from Tahitian and South Sea pearls in many ways, such as size range and shape. A perfectly round fresh water pearl is a lot harder to find than a perfectly round South Sea pearl. This makes the A-AA-AAA grading system hard to apply and compare to the one used for Tahitian and South Sea Pearls.
